Quick Transfer Summary

Students may transfer up to three courses toward the Psychology major at Lake Forest College. These courses may be applied to the major as follows:

Major Requirement  Maximum Transferable
PSYC 110L (Intro to Psychological Science with Lab) 1 course
Menu A or Menu B requirement 1 course
Elective requirement 1 course
Total transferable courses toward the major Maximum of 3

Each transferred course may satisfy only one requirement within the Psychology major. Detailed eligibility rules for each category appear below.

Guiding Principles

Students may transfer up to three courses to satisfy requirements of the Psychology major at Lake Forest College (see specific rules below). To be eligible for transfer toward the major, a course must:

  • be completed with a grade of C- or better;
  • have substantially similar content to the corresponding Lake Forest College course, as determined by the Psychology Department (based on the course description or syllabus); and
  • be taken at the same or a higher course level as the corresponding Lake Forest College course.

Courses taken at a lower level than the corresponding Lake Forest College course may count toward overall graduation credit but cannot satisfy specific Psychology major requirements.

Students must complete at least six of the nine Psychology major requirements at Lake Forest College (i.e., for Lake Forest College credit).

Specific Transfer Rules

Following the guiding principles above, students may transfer up to three courses to satisfy Psychology major requirements. These may include:

  • the PSYC 110L (Introduction to Psychological Science with Lab) requirement (see details below)
  • one Menu A or one Menu B requirement (see details below)
  • the Elective requirement (see details below)

Each transferred course may satisfy only one requirement within the Psychology major.

1. The PSYC 110L Requirement. PSYC 110L (Introduction to Psychological Science with Lab) provides foundational training in psychological science and quantitative reasoning. This requirement may be satisfied in one of the following ways:

  • (A) Completion of PSYC 110L at Lake Forest College.
  • (B) Transfer credit for an introductory psychology course with a laboratory component comparable to PSYC 110L.
  • (C) Transfer credit for an introductory psychology course without a laboratory component together with one of the following:
    • completion of a college-level course in basic statistics, or
    • a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam, or
    • completion of the 0.25 credit PSYC 150 course at Lake Forest College (offered for free each July Term to incoming psychology or neuroscience transfer students).
  • (D) A score of 5 on the AP Psychology exam together with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam.
  • (E) Departmental waiver for transfer students who have completed two or more psychology courses beyond the introductory level at the transferring institution together with one of the following:
    • completion of a college-level course in basic statistics, or
    • completion of the 0.25 credit PSYC 150 course at Lake Forest College (offered for free each July Term to incoming psychology or neuroscience transfer students).

Advising note: All transfer students are strongly encouraged to complete the 0.25 credit PSYC 150 course at Lake Forest College (offered for free each July Term to incoming psychology or neuroscience transfer students) because it serves as an excellent primer for PSYC 221L: Methods & Statistics I.

2. Menu A or Menu B Transfer Credit. To satisfy one Menu A requirement or one Menu B requirement, a transferred course must meet the following criteria:

  • The course content must be substantially similar to the corresponding Lake Forest College course, as determined by the Psychology Department.
  • The course must be taken at the same or a higher course level as the Lake Forest College course.
  • The course must represent a survey course in the relevant psychological subfield, rather than a narrowly specialized topic course.

Advising note: PSYC 255 (Social Psychology) is the most commonly transferred course used to satisfy a Menu A requirement because Social Psychology is widely offered at the 200/2000 level across institutions.

3. Elective Transfer Credit. To satisfy one Elective requirement, a transferred course must be:

  • an additional psychology course beyond those used to satisfy other major requirements, and
  • taken at the 200/2000 level or higher.

When possible, students are encouraged to select an elective course that does not also appear on the Menu A or Menu B lists, which preserves greater flexibility when selecting courses to satisfy those requirements.

Advising note: PSYC 210 (Developmental Psychology) is the most commonly transferred course used to satisfy an Elective requirement because Developmental Psychology is widely offered at the 200/2000 level across institutions and does not appear as a Menu A or Menu B course at Lake Forest College.
