We understand that parents have questions and concerns about their students going off-campus. Please know that we are here to help.
Benefits of an Off-Campus Experience
An off-campus experience can be a transformative part of a student’s college journey. Beyond the opportunity to explore a new part of the world, studying away helps students build the skills, confidence, and global awareness that prepare them for success in their academic, personal, and professional lives.
Students who participate in an off-campus program may:
- Strengthen their resumes and graduate school applications through a meaningful global experience
- Gain hands-on academic or professional experience in a multicultural environment
- Connect classroom learning with real-world experiences and perspectives
- Develop language skills and increase confidence communicating across different cultures
- Gain a broader international perspective within their field of study
- Experience another culture while developing a deeper understanding of their own
- Build independence, adaptability, and self-confidence
- Enhance cross-cultural communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
Research has shown that incorporating an international experience into a degree program can positively impact student success, including supporting on-time graduation and contributing to stronger academic focus and performance after returning to campus.
For parents, an off-campus experience represents an investment in a student’s growth—helping them become more prepared, resilient, and globally engaged as they move toward their future goals.
Affording an Off-Campus Experience
For many students and families, cost is an important consideration when planning an off-campus experience. With early planning and careful program selection, studying abroad can be an affordable and valuable part of a student’s college education.
Students who make an off-campus experience a priority can explore a variety of ways to manage costs, including picking an affordable program, personal savings, scholarships, and financial aid. Planning ahead allows students to compare programs, understand expenses, and choose an option that best fits their academic goals and budget.
For approved programs that offer guaranteed financial aid transferability, students pay their Lake Forest College tuition along with a program fee. Program fees vary depending on location, length, and program structure, and the Global Engagement Office (GEO) is always happy to work with students to identify options that align with their academic needs and financial considerations.
While many study abroad programs cost about the same as a semester at Lake Forest College, expenses can vary considerably depending on the program. Students and families are encouraged to compare options carefully, taking into account factors such as location, housing, transportation, and personal expenses.
Financial aid applies to all programs on the approved semester program list, and additional scholarship opportunities may be available through national awards such as the Gilman and Boren Scholarships, as well as through individual program providers. GEO staff support students throughout the process, helping them compare opportunities and navigate scholarship applications. Please note that the ACM/Lake Forest tuition benefit only applies for EXCHANGE programs.
With thoughtful planning and support, an off-campus experience can be an achievable investment in a student’s academic and personal growth.
Student Safety Abroad
We take student safety seriously and regularly evaluate the academic quality, student support, and overall experience offered by our study abroad partners.
Before departure, all students participate in a mandatory orientation covering cultural adjustment, health, safety, and security. We help students understand potential risks, prepare for challenges, and identify resources available while abroad.
While every study abroad program involves some level of risk, we provide students and families with timely information so they can make informed decisions and take appropriate precautions. Responsible choices by students are one of the best ways to promote a safe and successful experience.
How Parents Can Help
Parents can support their student's health and safety by:
- Review the College's EIIA Travel Insurance coverage and our Health & Safety page
- Learning about the host country's laws, customs, and travel advisories.
- Reviewing medical needs, medications, and emergency information before departure.
- Encouraging safe handling of money and valuables.
- Keeping digital copies of important documents, such as passports.
Staying Connected
To stay in touch while your student is abroad:
- Arrange a quick call or text after they arrive.
- Establish a regular—but flexible—communication schedule.
- Encourage brief check-ins before and after personal travel.
- Contact the study abroad program only in the event of an emergency; families will be notified if a serious issue arises.
- Use messaging and video apps such as WhatsApp or Zoom to stay connected.
Supporting Your Student
Studying abroad is an opportunity for personal growth and independence. While staying connected is important, giving students the space to navigate new experiences helps build confidence and resilience. If significant health, safety, or mental health concerns arise, contact your student's on-site study abroad program coordinator, as well as GEO staff, for assistance.
