Greenhouse

The Lake Forest College Greenhouse

The Greenhouse is a beautiful, carefully maintained educational tool for students across a variety of fields and disciplines. With plants ranging from tropical orchids, to desert cacti, to ecologically threatened species, the Greenhouse has created a hands-on environment for learning about the natural world.

The Greenhouse is utilized in many classes, including BIOL 120 Organismal Biology, BIOL 133 Tropical Forest Ecology, BIOL 220 Ecology and Evolution, BIOL 384 Plant Biology, BIOL 386 Experimental Plant Ecology, ES 220 Ecology, Evolution, and Environment, ES/ART 229 Art and the Environment, ES 288 Botanical Imperialism, and ES 326 Interrogating the Ecology of Place, for experiments and observations. Faculty members also conduct research projects in the Greenhouse.

The Greenhouse has become the perfect environment for starting plants in the spring for our student garden as well as cultivating native plant species for the ecological restoration projects on campus.

The Greenhouse hosts plant sales for the campus community. All the plants are grown in the Greenhouse and are cared for by student workers and Greenhouse management. All sales are donation based and help the Greenhouse to continue to be able to grow more plants for the community.

The Greenhouse was completed in 2018 with a generous donation from an anonymous donor. It is located on the east end of Lillard Science Center.
