Notes from Abroad: Valerie in France
Valerie Guerrero '27, a French and International Relations double major, with an Urban Studies minor, studied abroad at Université Catholique de Lyon in Lyon, France.
My time in Lyon has made me appreciate the simple things in life, like taking a walk in the Parc de la Tête d'Or, or admiring the unique, colorful architecture of Vieux Lyon. Or eating the signature brioche aux pralines on the banks of the Rhône River. I have had the privilege of making this city my home for the past four months, living in a different environment, and being able to travel and learn from other countries around France.
During my stay, I visited Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as many regions within France, making me appreciate each country’s rich history and culture.
This experience taught me not to doubt myself. When I first arrived in Lyon, I had to gain the courage to face obstacles that now seem small, but that initially intimidated me so much. Like holding a long conversation with locals in French, figuring out how to get to my university from my homestay without getting lost, or doing grocery shopping without knowing the names of the ingredients. However, the support and guidance of my amazing host parents, who welcomed me with open arms from the very beginning, made my adjustment to France much easier.
Looking back, I notice how much I've grown as a person. I feel more comfortable on my own, navigating different cultures and languages, and not being afraid of the unknown, but welcoming it with grace.
Lyon has been the best city for me to develop in this way. Its great geographical location has allowed me to reach major cities like Paris or Geneva in two hours. As the gastronomic capital of France, it has allowed me to savor its delicious dishes in the famous bouchons, and its excellent public transportation system has made my daily commute to university much easier.
As I prepare to say goodbye to this chapter of my life, I carry deep gratitude for the opportunities life presents. I couldn't have had this wonderful experience without the generous support of the Ingrid H. and George L. Speros Scholarship and the Global Engagement Office, which helped me during each step.
