Kairo Fuller '27, a Psychology and Spanish Major from Trinidad and Tobago, studied abroad at La Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

Coming from the Caribbean, I always missed island life after leaving for college, so when I discovered that Puerto Rico was an option, I knew I should choose it. I was excited to explore more of my own region, immerse myself in a shared yet distinct Caribbean culture, eat some good creole food, and meet new people, all while challenging myself with a new language. For me, it was a no-brainer.

Santurce truly felt like a second home. From the moment I arrived, I made it my mission to say yes and push myself out of my comfort zone, even attending “Sanse”, the island's biggest celebration one day after landing. Between trips to the beach, hiking through El Yunque, and listening to the beautiful sound of the coquís at night, I found myself growing more and more grateful for the kind of beauty I may have taken for granted back home. There is something humbling about watching others light up over the very things you grew up with.

One of the most meaningful challenges of the semester was language. Moving to a country where I would live, learn, and connect entirely in a new language was daunting, but I embraced it fully. Thanks to a warm and welcoming community in PR and perseverance, I made real strides in my fluency. Comparing where I started to now where I can confidently express myself was one of the most rewarding parts of my experience.

None of that growth would have felt as supported without my program coordinator, Alex, whose warmth and genuine care made Puerto Rico feel like home from the very first week. Although I am sad to leave, I leave with friendships, perspective, sunsets and memories I will carry for a lifetime, and a deepened appreciation for the profound value of stepping into the unfamiliar and making the most of every moment.
