Notes from Abroad: Fai in New Zealand
Fai' 28 visiting Fiordland National Park
Fai Homkajohn ' 28, a Physics major, studied abroad this past semester at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
I remember standing in awe at the peak of the Rob Roy Glacier track, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. In the background was the ancient glacier that was so close you could see a glimpse of blue from the ice. I had a chance to visit many beautiful places in New Zealand since the University of Otago was located in the South Island, which was an easy access to famous attractions such as Queenstown, Milford Sound, or Mount Cook. Road trips longer than five hours felt like minutes because I was busy appreciating the landscapes along the way. However, that was not the only thing I loved about this study abroad experience.
More than just road trips, New Zealand was also an incredibly transformative experience. My first few weeks felt exhausting and out of place. I expected myself to adjust fast, and I compared my experience to others, which I eventually learned was not a good idea. However, the University of Otago was such a warm and welcoming place that it felt more and more like home every day. My favorite memories were when my flat mates and I would play charades for hours in our flat’s living room. I also loved the time my classmate drove me to a beach just 10 minutes from the university, and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. And strangely, I also appreciated even when I struggled in my classes, but the professors were so patient and understanding, I ended up learning so much more than I realized.
Although it was a roller coaster of emotions at first. I learned to experience New Zealand in a way that was unique and meaningful to me. I am incredibly grateful to all the people I met during these past four months who made my study abroad experience feel as special as it is. Lastly, I will forever miss the hokey pokey ice cream from Rob Roy Dairy just across the university’s central library.
