CAP Colloquium: Evaluating the SANE and TeleSANE Patient Experience: Centering Survivors to Improve Patient Care
4:15 pm - 5:30 pm
Please note this talk will be discussing sexual assault.* Dr. Jessica Shaw presents an ongoing study on the effect of specialized Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners compared to a telehealth version of the same provider.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are specially trained to provide post-assault medical forensic care to patients who have been sexually assaulted. Prior research has demonstrated that SANEs provided a markedly improved response as compared to that provided by a non-SANE traditional emergency department. In recent years, communities unable to provide consistent in-person SANE care have started to offer access to SANE expertise via telehealth technology (teleSANE). However, there is still much to learn about the patient experience receiving care from both in-person SANEs and teleSANEs as few SANE and teleSANE programs have the capacity to collect feedback from the patients they serve. In this talk, Dr. Jessica Shaw will present on an ongoing study in which she and her team partnered with a SANE program and patient-survivors to document patient-survivors’ experiences receiving SANE and teleSANE care and to develop a patient experience assessment tool that can be used by SANE and teleSANE programs going forward. Dr. Shaw will highlight how such challenging work is possible, as long as we design and implement it with intention.
*Please note that this talk will be discussing sexual assault. Many of us have our own direct and indirect histories with this type of harm. Some folks find it helpful to bring coloring books, doodle pads, fidgets, or other accessories when encountering this kind of content. These tools serve different purposes for different people—they sometimes help to ground us, provide a needed distraction, or facilitate our focus. Dr. Shaw invites you to bring what you need to engage with the material on your terms.
