Emília de Paula Fonseca ’26 received one of the highest honors bestowed on a college student in the State of Illinois when she was inaugurated as a 2025 Student Lincoln Laureate.

De Paula Fonseca was among top students representing Illinois’ colleges and universities recognized during the 51st Annual Convocation and Investiture of Student Laureates, a ceremony hosted by The Lincoln Academy of Illinois at University of Chicago, on October 18.

In the spirit of Lincoln, Student Laureates are honored for their leadership and service in the pursuit of the betterment of humanity and for overall excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities.

Every fall, an outstanding senior from each of the four-year degree-granting institutions of higher learning in Illinois is awarded the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award bestowed by the Governor of Illinois.

The economics and international relations double major was selected as this year’s Lake Forest Laureate for the many ways she has contributed to the Forester Community.

“Her leadership in this space is not only marked by effectiveness, but by empathy for those most impacted.”

De Paula Fonseca led efforts to address sexual assault prevention and survivor advocacy on campus—work that required both conviction and compassion. Through her roles as a Title IX student worker, advisory committee member, and co-president of the College’s It’s On Us chapter, she has advanced policy, built coalitions, and helped create a safer, more just campus environment. Equally committed to fostering inclusive communities, de Paula Fonseca helped re-establish the International Student Association.

“Her leadership in this space is not only marked by effectiveness, but by empathy for those most impacted,” said Aldo Guzman, Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Gates Center for Leadership and Personal Growth.

In addition, de Paula Fonseca has served as a Resident Assistant, Health and Wellness Peer Educator, and Gummere Fellow.

“Across these roles, she has approached her peers with honesty, humility, and a deep desire to uplift others; hallmarks of the servant leadership Lincoln modeled,” Guzman said.

As is tradition, each new Student Laureate received a Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award certificate signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker; a Lincoln medallion; a challenge coin; and a $1,000 check from The Lincoln Academy. Student Laureates are selected by their individual schools.

In her Student Laureate Legacy Statement, de Paula Fonseca said: “While a leader is often in the spotlight, true leadership is a selfless process. Lincoln’s Leadership Legacy illustrates that at the center of being a leader are the people you serve and represent, not yourself. Such a principle guides my commitment to listening to and understanding those whose lives are touched by my actions while being aware of the weight of my leadership, given that affecting even a single life requires rsponsibility and commitment to equality and empathy.”
