Sanford spent part of her summer working in the office of Don Knabe, supervisor of the fourth district in Los Angeles County, for field deputy Angie Valenzuela. The politics and communications double major from Brea, California also completed a for-credit internship with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

As an intern for the County Board of Supervisors, Sanford helped resolve community concerns and attended weekly meetings where staff brief the county supervisors on upcoming legislation before they vote.

“It is every politics major’s dream to sit in on those meetings,” she said. “I am grateful I had such an inclusive supervisor who let me participate.”

Sanford also revamped the Military Banner Program, which recognizes active duty military soldiers with their names on banners hanging from poles in major thoroughfares. She worked with the families of those in service to organize and update the program.

“What I learned has been invaluable,” Sanford said. “I was exposed to the world of county government and was able to use both my majors effectively in this experience.”
