Different universities, same passion: Two former bio students get their PhDs in same week
D'Anne Duncan '04 successfully defended her PhD thesis in biology at Northwestern University in April 2011.
Friends and former classmates at Lake Forest College successfully defended their PhD theses in biology within 24 hours of each other.
D’Anne Duncan ‘04 earned her PhD in neuroscience at Northwestern University. Her thesis was on multiple sclerosis, on which topic she has published two papers already and received a National Institutes of Health/National Research Service Award award to do the studies. While a biology student at Lake Forest, D’Anne spent two summers conducting research on human genetics with Professor Carole Ober at the University of Chicago, one summer on asthma and the other summer on pre-eclampsia. She also did an academic year internship at Rosalind Franklin University Medical School in a neural stem cell research lab. She was a member of the prestigious Lake Forest College Senior 25.
Samantha England ‘04 earned her PhD in biology at University of Rochester. Her thesis was on how blood forms as our body develops, on which topic she also has published two papers. While at student at Lake Forest, Samantha worked in Shubhik DebBurman’s lab and was an author in a study published in the 2006 Journal of Molecular Neuroscience. She was also a four-year member of the Lake Forest College handball and soccer teams, the Lake Forest College choir, and the Lake Forest College Community Service Organization.
