Chris Wiatr ’13 dominates at Chicago Triathlon
Chris Wiatr, a junior cross country runner, finished second in his age group in the Chicago Triathlon that took place on Sunday, August 28. Wiatr was racing to receive his professional license and finished only 54 seconds behind the winner.
“My goal was to receive my professional license and since I finished in the top 3, I accomplished that goal. I was happy to end my season on such a great note,” said Wiatr.
The full distance triathlon consisted of a 1.5K swim, 40K bike ride, and a 10K run. Wiatr noted that the biking was his weakest portion of the race.
“Because of the windy conditions that day which would favor the stronger bikers, I knew that I had to have a fast run in order to win,” he said.
Wiatr came off the bike ride in fourth place and passed two runners to finish in 2nd.
“I knew my legs were completely dead after that intense 25-mile bike ride, but I still tried to win. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough fuel in the tank, and I ended up less than a minute behind the leader.” explained Wiatr. “With having such a great triathlon season, I am excited to start cross country and hopefully, I can have a good season there as well!”
There were 3,3375 participants that raced in the full distance triathlon.
